雲ひとつない快晴の下、海岸公園の駐車場で待ち合わせ。初夏のような陽気も相まって、非日常なシチュエーションに早速なんだか浮き足立ってしまう。そこへサーフボードを乗せたクラシックカーで颯爽と現れたのは、スタイリスト・ボタニカルデザイナーのMoriyasuさん。東京から藤沢へと住まいを移して早20年。海のそばで暮らすことの魅力、そして現在のワークスタイルについて、お話を伺った。

We met under a cloudless blue sky in the parking lot of a seaside park. The sun was dazzling like early summer, and I was suddenly disconcerted by this out-of-the-ordinary situation. Just then, up came stylist and botanical designer Moriyasu, looking cool in her classic car with a surfboard strapped on the top. It has already been 20 years since she moved from Tokyo to Fujisawa. I talked with her about what she likes about living near the sea and her current work style.

Interview 「心惹かれる方向へ、流れるままに」

海の無い暮らしなんてもう考えられない、と語るMoriyasuさん。しかし意外にもサーフィンとの出会いは、友人に付き添ってサーフィンスクールに参加したのがきっかけだったそうだ。「もともと私は藤沢育ちで、海もマリンスポーツもずっと身近にあったのに、今まで全く触れてこなかったんです。海よりも音楽に夢中な学生時代で。でもいい大人になってから体験したら、『サーフィンってただのスポーツじゃなかったんだ』と思い知らされて。海に浸かっているだけで、余計なものがすうっと浄化されていく感じがするんです。その感覚がとにかく衝撃的で、楽しくて、あっという間に虜になりました」。

取材に応じてくださった間にも、行く先々でたくさんのサーファー仲間から声を掛けられていたMoriyasuさんの姿が印象強く残っている。サーファーカルチャーとでも言うのだろうか。初めこそまるで外国にでも来たかのように感じていたが、老若男女分け隔てのない距離感の近さにはどこか懐かしささえ覚えた。「私にサーフィンを教えてくれた人も、日々海と向き合っているとても心が大らかな方で。サーフィンを通じて、人とのつながりもそうですし、本当に数え切れないくらいたくさんのものを得ることができました。幸せ者です」。

コロナ禍の影響もあってか、最近はサーフィンを始める人が急増したという。「道具は一式レンタルもできますし、興味をもってくださる仲間が増えることは嬉しいんです。でも気軽にチャレンジできるようになった反面、サーフィンの表面的な部分しか享受していないというか、マナーの悪い方も少なからずいて…それはすごく残念だなと思いますね」。ちょうどそんな話の最中にも、サーフボードを階段にぶつけながら海へ向かうサーファーとすれ違った。実際、車からボードをそっとおろし、頭に乗せながら海へと向かうMoriyasuさんの所作を見れば、彼女がボードを心底大切にしていることは一目瞭然だった。「サーフィンに限らず、ごく当たり前のことなんですけどね。自然や物への感謝の気持ちはこれからも大切にしたいですね」と、彼らの背中を見送りつつ言葉を添えた。

Interview “Follow your passion, go with the flow”

“Living away from the sea is unthinkable,” Moriyasu told me. Yet surprisingly, her first encounter with surfing came when she went along with a friend to surf school. “I grew up in Fujisawa, where the sea and marine sports were all around me, but I had not tried any of them. Rather than the sea, as a university student, I was totally into music. But once I grew up and gave it a try, I found out that surfing was far from just another sport. It is as if by immersing yourself in the sea, you are completely cleansed of anything superfluous. It was a startling sensation. It was fun and before I knew it, I was hooked.”

Moriyasu’s look left a strong impression during our day together. Wherever we went, her surfer friends would greet her. That is surely the surfer culture we hear about. It felt like I had arrived in a different country for the first time. The equality and closeness between young and old, women and men felt like another place and time. “The person who taught me how to surf was very easygoing and went in the sea every day. Through surfing, I have truly gained so much, including those connections with others. I am lucky.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there has been a sudden increase in people taking up surfing. “You can rent whatever you need, and I am delighted that more people are getting into it. But while it is accessible to newcomers, there is a tendency to be interested in the superficial side of surfing only and there are quite a few rude types around… I find this very unfortunate.” Just as she said that, a group of surfers walks past, knocking their boards on the steps on their way to the beach. In contrast, it was obvious from her actions that Moriyasu treats her board with utmost respect. She takes it off her car and places it gently on the ground before lifting it onto her head for the walk to the beach. “It is just common sense for anything, not just surfing. I don’t want to lose that feeling of gratitude for nature and possessions,” she added, her gaze not leaving the careless group heading for the water.

ここでサーファー仲間のみなさんとお別れして、今度はMoriyasuさんのアトリエ兼ボタニカルショップ「BIRDIE」へお邪魔することに。海岸から車を走らせること約15分。友人のサーフボード工房と共有しているというガレージが見えてきた。すっきりとした外観のイメージとは裏腹に、足を踏み入れてみると屋内はカラフルでどこかエキゾチック。

Moriyasuさんの自然体な雰囲気からは想像もつかないが、以前は都内でなかなかにワーカホリックな日々を送っていたという。「でも忙しく過ごす中で、このままでいいのかな？ってふと考え直したんです。出産をして長女が小学校に入るタイミングで、両親もいる地元の街に戻ろうと決心して。ファッション業界って流行り廃りが目まぐるしく変わっていく世界でもあるので、私は産休を挟んで現場から離れたことがきっかけに、それからは自分に合ったペースとやり方で好きなものに向き合っていこうと、少しずつワークスタイルを変えていきました」。

This is where we bade farewell to her surfer friends and went to BIRDIE, Moriyasu’s workshop and botanical shop. It is a 15-minute drive from the coast. I caught sight of the garage she shares with her friend’s surfboard factory. In utter contrast to the exterior, the inside of the shop is colorful and somehow exotic.

It is impossible to guess from her natural aura, but Moriyasu was once a workaholic in downtown Tokyo. “But one busy day, I suddenly asked myself, is this how I want to go on? I made up my mind to return to the town my parents lived when it was time for my eldest daughter to start elementary school. The fashion industry is a world of dizzying change, where fads come and go in a flash. My maternity leave gave me a chance to separate myself from work. That was when I began to do things more at my own pace, and to focus on my passion. My work style changed gradually from there.”

引き続きファッションスタイリストとしてもゆるやかに活動しながら、Moriyasuさんが新たに歩み始めたのはボタ二カルデザイナーの道だった。「小さい頃から植物やお花が大好きで、休養中に改めて魅力に惹かれたんです。ただ仕事として向き合うからにはちゃんと勉強したかったので、アルバイトとして花屋さんに数年勤めて学ばせてもらったりして」と、何事に対しても妥協しない、ストイックな姿勢が窺えるエピソードも。お話を聞きながら思わずこちらの背筋が伸びる。

「BIRDIE」で扱っているのはドライフラワーや観葉植物、ガーデン植物が中心。取材に伺ったこの日は、流木アーティストとのコラボ作品だというアレンジメントがいくつも天井から吊り下がっていて、思わず目を奪われた。ファッション業界での経験も生かし、近年では植物を絡めたスタイリングやアートワーク撮影なども手掛けているそうだ。「お祝い花の定番であるコチョウランも、そのままの形だと部屋には飾りづらいけど、流木などに着生させて野生の蘭の状態に仕立ててあげるだけで、ずっときれいに飾っておけるんですよ」。なるべくごみは出さず、限りある命を大切に。Moriyasuさんの根底にある想いがここにも脈打っていた。

今回着用いただいたIcebreakerについても、ものづくりに対する姿勢には共感するものがあるという。「自然素材にこだわっていてすてきですよね。すごく肌触りがいいし、ウールに包まれているやさしい感じが好きです。余計な力が抜けて、そのままごろごろしたくなっちゃうような。カラーバリエーションも全体的に大人っぽいので、どんなシーンにも合わせやすくて重宝します」。

While she continued to work more moderately as a fashion stylist, Moriyasu set out on a new path to becoming a botanical designer. “I loved plants and flowers as a child,” she recalls, and recounts an anecdote that shows her refusal to compromise and her stoicism. “During my leave, they drew me back in. Yet to make this my job, I wanted to study properly, so I did my apprenticeship by working for several years at a florist.” My spine straightened as I listened.

BIRDIE mainly offers dried flowers, ornamentals, and garden plants. On the day I visited, dangling from the ceiling were several works produced in collaboration with a driftwood artist, which I am most taken by. Using her experience in the fashion industry, she has in recent years been dabbling in styling and artwork photography involving botanics. “Orchids are a staple of celebration flower arrangements, but they are hard to decorate a room with as they are. However, by placing them on driftwood in a way that mimics wild orchids, the decoration is much prettier.” She is all about reducing waste and making the most of the limited years of life. This goes to the heart of the Moriyasu philosophy.

When it comes to the Icebreaker she was wearing, she said she shares its approach to the way things are made. “The embrace of natural materials is wonderful. This is so comfortable on the skin. I love the feeling of being swaddled in wool. It makes me want to ease up and take a rest immediately. The color variations are also very adult overall. This is a precious garment that would suit any situation.”

最後に、Moriyasuさんが今後の展望を聞かせてくれた。「今は『制作』ばかりですが、いずれは植物の『生産』についても学んで、携わっていきたいんです。恵まれた今のこの場所も、心惹かれる方向へ進んでいたら流れ着いたようなもので。これからも自分の感性を大切にして、好きなことを仕事に変えられる環境を探していきたいと思っています。海と植物さえあればどこへでも」。

Finally, I asked Moriyasu what she sees ahead. “For now it is all about ‘production’, but eventually I hope to study the ‘production’ of plants and get involved with it. This blessed place I am in now is where I ended up after following my passion. In the future, I will find an environment in which I can work on what I love, without losing my own artistic sense. That could be anywhere, as long as there is the sea and plants.
