INTRODUCTION

STARP is an unprecedented totally
new tarp composed of several triangles and pentagons.
The name comes from its star-shaped ceiling.
This unique figure based on the design philosophy of Geodome® 4 released in 2018 will give a sophisticated impression.
Also, the structural theory and philosophy of
Dymaxion, which aims at “maximum gain of advantage from minimal energy input”, advocated by Richard Buckminster Fuller echo in STARP.
This innovative product opens the new possibility of the outdoors.

The star-shaped tarp opens
the new possibility of the outdoors

In our time, categorization happens in numerous fields. Even it has various definitions; however, when it comes to a tarp, the shapes are generally labeled as; rectangular recta-tarp, square-tarp, hexagonal hexa-tarp, and rhombic wing-tarp, etc. The North Face’s new STARP that features the uncategorizable design and function opens the new possibility of tarps.
The beautiful form in which straight lines and curves are integrated is reminiscent of sculpture and the name of STARP comes from its star-shaped ceiling. The characteristic shape does not only leave a visual impact, but also is designed based on rational theory to ensure tarp’s essential functions; rain and wind protection and temperature regulation. While regular tarps feature 2-pole structure, STARP has 3 poles.
Using different numbers of poles realizes flexible arrangements corresponding to the conditions of weather and ground.
Until the commercialization, our product development team had traveled around to run tests in many places with various weather conditions and kept producing prototypes. The feedbacks acquired from the test set up in numerous situations are reflected in the improvement. While we pursued and tested further durability, lightweight, a practical water discharge structure, and an effective and rational sewing pattern, the design is unified in triangle and pentagon throughout the details. This commitment is applied to not only the shape of the tarp, but also the fabric weave pattern and accessories alike poles and stakes.

The design philosophy of STARP
is inherited from Geodome®︎ 4

Even the components such as poles and stakes are developed through close communication with both domestic and overseas factories. Applying STARP’s identity of pentagon design to every detail without sacrificing functionality was a big challenge. However, the team reached the ideal answer after trial and error.
The above design philosophy comes from the latest dome tent, Geodome®︎ 4 which was released in 2018, and furthermore, the concept of the great inventor; Richard Buckminster Fuller who supervised The North Face’s first dome tent, OVAL INTENTION in 1975 and has been called “the 20th century's Leonardo da Vinci”.
Geodome®︎ 4 is our monumental product that ensures strength with only 6 poles and realizes 210cm (82.6inc) living area which is equal to the minimum ceiling height required by the building standards. This structure also contributes to a lightweight and effortless set up.
The concept of “Dymaxion”, meaning ”maximum gain of advantage from minimal energy input” and the keyword of “Icosidodecahedron”, the name of a polyhedron with twenty triangular faces and twelve pentagonal faces are clearly reflected on the design of STARP. Its unique appearance evokes an image of a spaceship and renders unprecedented totally new spaciousness.
STARP and Geodome®︎ 4 share the common design philosophy even though each of them has different forms. Combining these two products generates a significant synergistic effect. STARP can be used not only as of the front vestibule, but also as multi-purpose comfortable space such as a living room or kitchen. The time spent in this space, where Fuller’s notion of “comfortable living environment brings happiness” is embodied, will stimulate people’s imagination and bring us new ideas.
STARP shows various faces depending on the viewing angle, a number of poles in use, and how guylines are set up. This versatility gives the impression that it is the embodiment of Fuller’s message; “Change your mind. Push the limits of thinking”, or it talks, “you can get better life depending on how you recognize things”.
STARP and Geodome®︎ 4—the appearances standing in the beautiful nature harmonize with surrounding scenery and give a powerful impression. An unprecedented space will be rendered and there spreads a distinctive experience that no one has had.

STARP― the characteristic form that looks pentagon-shape from above and triangle-shape
from the ground is reminiscent of a spaceship. Our uncompromising originality resides in not only the design, but also the detail.

DETAIL
image1

The combination of straight lines and curves gives a beautiful impression. The waterproof and sun protective fabric is elaborately sewn to ensure wind resistance. It can be used on its own or in combination with Geodome® 4 to create a spacious and comfortable front living space.

image2

This product features a water discharge structure for set-up in rain. While general tarps need to be fixed by lowering the middle of the ceiling with tight rope tension, STARP provides a rational water discharge structure that lets rainwater converge and flow off to the ground.

image3

Guylines hold the tarp on the ground by tensioning. Storage pockets attached to each of the backsides contribute not only to guylines loss prevention, but also quick pull out.

image4

The triangle-shaped design code rooted in Fuller’s “geodesic structure” is applied to a regular continuous dobby check pattern. With the triangle-shaped fabric weave pattern, the design realizes a sense of unity.

OPTION
image1

The original pentagon-shaped tarp pole is developed exclusively for STARP. Easy jointing is realized by a high-strength push-button system. The pole is coated with alumite that scratches won't stand out.

image2

The top part of tarp pole is designed longer than usual. In order to prevent the rope from slipping out by the strong wind, 5 lines are engraved on the tip.

image3

Stakes are also coated with alumite as well as tarp poles. The striking head surface is also designed in pentagon-shape. This stake makes the STARP capable of various geological conditions and situations.

image4

For the guylines, the rope tensioner is also designed in triangle-shape. Since it has more friction with ropes than the 2 holes type, this triangle-shaped tensioner serves as a strong stopper.

With STARP, the new color, tin grey flysheet for Geodome®︎ 4 is also released(*). This flysheet uses the same fabric as STARP that waterproof and wind protection are increased. The consistency will empower the visual synergy.
Fuller once told, “improvement of the world can only be realized by changing the human living environment”. The North Face’s Geodome®︎ 4 series inherits the faith of the great inventor and keep evolving. This innovative equipment is adding a brand new history.
(*)Tin grey flysheet will be sold separately. Existing package of Geodome®︎ 4 includes saffron yellow flysheet.

Geodome®︎ 4 which features dome-shape as the most characteristic design shows a new face in combination with flysheet. Remaining the distinctive design, the functionality is upgraded. It realizes a more comfortable living space.

DETAIL
